Postdoc Position in the area of Coastal Carbon Fluxes
We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral researcher to join the department Fluxes Across Interfaces within the newly formed Institute of Carbon Cycles, as a coastal biogeochemist. Our research is broadly aimed at the coastal carbon cycle, how it is affected by human activities, and how these activities could be used to reduce atmospheric CO2. The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary group on research topics including but not limited to 1) direct measurements of air-sea CO2 exchange in wind farms, tidal inlets, and other coastal waters, 2) assessments of net ecosystem carbon exchange in seagrasses and tidal marshes, as well as 3) coastal alkalinity cycling. Atmospheric Eddy Covariance (EC) based gas exchange is a central pillar of our research, but we are open to applicants with diverse research interests and experiences in coastal carbon biogeochemistry.
We invite applications for a Postdoc position in the area of Coastal Carbon Fluxes at the Institute of Carbon Cycles with preferred starting date in summer 2022. The position is limited to two years, with a potential one-year extension.
Your tasks:
- operate and maintain EC installations in diverse coastal habitats
- plan and carry out field experiments aimed at quantifying carbon sources/sinks within the EC footprint
- synthesize results, prepare manuscripts, and conference presentations, share results with scientific community
- bring a unique perspective and broaden our research activities by collaborating on proposals
Essential qualifications:
- PhD in an appropriate field, i.e. marine science, ecology, oceanography, meteorology
- proven ability to independently lead coastal and land-based research in challenging conditions
- reasonably proficient with at least one programming language (R, Matlab, Python, etc)
- excellent communication skills in English (spoken, written)
Desirable qualifications:
- proven physical ability to join ship-based campaigns
- international research experience
- academic publication record
- German communication skills
- drivers license
